Microplastics found in 90% of bottled water

A study conducted by researchers at the State University of New York in Fredonia, commissioned by Orb Media, analyzed 259 bottled water samples from 11 brands across nine countries. The findings revealed that:

  • Over 90% of the bottled water samples contained microplastic particles.

  • On average, there were 325 plastic particles per liter of bottled water

  • Some bottles, such as Nestlé Pure Life, contained concentrations as high as 10,000 plastic pieces per liter.

  • The most common type of plastic found was polypropylene, commonly used in bottle caps.

The study utilized Nile red dye to fluoresce particles in the water, a technique that binds to plastic surfaces, allowing for easier identification under a microscope.

In response to these findings, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water. While there is currently no evidence suggesting health impacts from microplastics in bottled water, the WHO emphasized the need for further research to understand the implications fully.
